-歳時記
飛梅(Tobiume)-
Plum blossoms are the flowers that herald the arrival of spring.
They bloom earlier than cherry blossoms.
Plum blossoms are highly fragrant and the white and red plum colored flowers are very beautiful.
IHOUSAISAI(衣裁歳彩) is located in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan, which is close to Dazaifu.
Dazaifu and plum trees are associated with Michizane Sugawara.
During the Heian period,
Sugawara no Michizane, who served as Minister of the Right,
was disgraced due to the false accusations of
Fujiwara no Tokihira, Minister of the Left.
He lost his position.
There are various theories that
there was a backlash by those who were jealous of his success.
He was transferred to Dazaifu
in Tsukushi Province by Emperor Daigo(the emperor of the time) ,
as Dazai-no-Gon-no-sochi(position).
When he left Dazaifu for Kyushu,
Michizane looked up at the plum tree
in his residence and composed a poem.
東風吹かば
にほひをこせよ
梅の花
主なしとて
春を忘るなWhen the spring wind blows,Sugawara no Michizane
send your scent (from Kyoto to Dazaifu),
O plum blossoms.
Do not forget spring just because your master
(Sugawara no Michizane) is not here.
This poem expresses this wish.
It is said that the plum tree flew from the capital to Dazaifu in one night,
yearning for Michizane.
The plum tree on the right side of
the main shrine of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is said to be"Tobiume".
He died in Dazaifu two years after
being transferred to the left.
In 905, a shrine was built over the grave site
where Sugawara no Michizane was buried,
and in 919, a splendid shrine pavilion was erected by imperial order.
This is the origin of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
